A few words about Article Directories: No one knows precisely how many article directories are out there. You can get your own article directory (anchor text), if you want, right now; that will add one more to the list. So, how on earth can one anyone know their count, at any point of time?
Also, some article directories are defunct; many others have never been updated for ages. There’s no point in submitting to such directories or counting them in your submissions; if you do, you’ll only be fooling yourself.
Should You Submit To A Few Or Many Article Directories?: What counts is whether you’re submitting to a reasonably large number of genuine directories that are alive and kicking. If there are a good number of them with high PR ranks, that’s even better. Some of the low PR ranked directories may get to the top with higher ranks soon; so, it is not necessary that every directory you submit to should have a high PR ranking. (Incidentally, PR rank itself is not the best indicator of a directory’s value to you.) And your effort in mass-submitting to multiple article directories is the same, whether you submit to 5, 50 or 500! You know the huge advantage of submitting a unique version of your every article to many directories - you get tons of traffic and 100% credits for your backlinks that can get your site higher SE ranking, and still more traffic.
The Pain Of Registering With Article Directories: The more the article directories you want to submit your articles to, the more logins you’ll need to create, since almost every article directory requires you to register first before submitting. And, you will almost certainly discover that the username and ‘pen name’ (that article dashboard directories additionally want you to fill in) may be available for you to own in some directories, but are already taken by somebody else in others. So, you may need to use one or more alternative usernames and pen names.
How To Manage The Pain Of Registering With 100’s Of Article Directories: At an average of 6 minutes per article directory, registering with 500 article directories (which is what many service providers recommend now) should easily take you more than 3000 minutes (50 hours), which is more than one week’s full time effort, at 8 hours a day. This is a one-time painful exercise you can’t avoid. So, it makes sense to register to as many directories as you can, as quickly as you can, since the benefits far outweigh the efforts. Use the services of a third party service provider, if your time is worth more.
The Devil Is In The Details: Also, there must be a way for you to pass on these login details (including pen name) to your article submission software. Most submission software will accept only one login, not a list of them directory-wise; some will not accept pen names; definitely not multiple pen names in most cases. But you have such a list that your article submission software should know. And there must be a way to expand this list as you go along, adding and deleting directory names and login details.
The Last Word: Despite these challenges, it makes sense to register with as many article directories as you can, preferably several 100’s of them, since these directories are gold. Their value to you will only keep increasing over time.
